HISTORY
The BMW 2002 is one of the significant models in the brand’s history, often credited with laying the foundation of 3d serie modelline,and for BMW’s reputation as a maker of sporty, well-engineered vehicles. Introduced in 1968, the 2002 was part of the “New Class” lineup, a series of compact sedans/coupes, designed to bring luxury, performance, and advanced engineering to a more affordable market. The 2002, in particular, was a game-changer for BMW, establishing the brand’s success in the U.S. and beyond
Our striking orange sleeper is a proud creation of S.C.R. (Sports Car Restoration), a Colorado-based shop known for its tasteful and expertly crafted classic BMW restorations and modifications.
SETUP
This `73 now powered by an iconic S14 2.3L S14 inline-four, originally found in the legendary BMW E30 M3. This engine is paired with a Dinan ECU, ensuring optimized performance and reliability. The engine features upgraded ignition components, including a Mallory ignition system, as well as a custom-fabricated cooling system with an electric fan. The exhaust features a 2002 Turbo-spec resonator and muffler, enhancing the car’s performance and sound.
Power is transferred to the rear wheels via an E30 M3-sourced Getrag 265 5-speed manual transmission, mated to a limited-slip differential with 3.45:1 gearing. The custom shift linkage ensures precise gear changes, adding to the driving experience.
The suspension is upgraded with Bilstein shocks, H&R springs, and Koni sway bars, ensuring exceptional handling. The car also benefits from front disc brakes sourced from the BMW 2002 tii model, providing solid stopping power. The rear drum brakes were upgraded with new shoes and related hardware.
VISUALS
The 2002’s exterior is finished in BMW Colorado Red (002). The car’s sleek look is enhanced by the installation of Italian-market front turn signal assemblies,front air dam, chrome bumpers with overriders, and a single off-center polished exhaust outlet. Pop-out rear windows and round taillights add to the main knowlegeable features. Recent work includes applying paint protection film to the hood, front bumper, fenders, and doors, preserving the car’s finish.
Inside, the cabin we can found the fully classy spirit – it has been upgraded with period-correct Scheel Rally 400 bucket seats,fully re-trimmed in black vinyl with textured cloth inserts. A rear bench, door panels, and carpeting match the factory classic interior look. The interior features basic but functional amenities, including a Clarion stereo and crank-operated windows+pop out rear quarter windows. The dashboard shows good condition too,with minor cracks along the lower dashboard to the left of the steering column.
