Vehicle Introduction
The dream of piloting a true racecar on the street is one that is shared by many in the automotive sphere.
With the introduction of the 964 generation of the 911 came the first Porsche Carrera Cup series. In 1992 Porsche switched from a normal C2 chassis to an RS chassis for the cup cars making this specific car 1 of 127 Carrera RS Cups built and 1 of only 15 built in 1993. Aside from the factory race preparations this 964 has recived a circuit spec 3.8L engine producing 320PS that was built by RIGHTWAY a Porsche raceshop in Suzuka City Japan( hometown of Suzuka circuit). RIGHTWAY was the sole shop to maintain and build this RS cup for the previous owner of 10+ years. In addition to the engine a host of other modifications have been made to make for a more capable machine, these will be discussed further down. In the 10+ years the previous owner had this RS cup it was gentleman raced in multiple series in Japan including, Carrera Cup, and Rush Cup . Unlike modern Porsche Cup cars this 964 RS Cup started life as street chassis and would maintain much more in common with the street car it is based on, meaning this RS Cup can be street registered and driven on the street without doing damage to any of the components.
Driving Experience
An Analog driving experience is one that has become increasingly in demand due to the numbness that plagues the majority of modern vehicles, when it comes to this RS Cup the experience is anything but numb. The added rigidity and lightness that comes from being a race chassis makes for an extremely direct connection between the driver and what the chassis is actively doing, allowing for a two way conversation of what the driver wants and how the vehicle is responding to that input. Power has increased from the factory rated RS CUP 278ps to 320ps courtesy of the Rightway built circuit spec 3.8L, this power can be accessed with urgency thanks to the added response of the custom 45mm ITB set up. Sending the power to the ground is a close ratio RS G50/10 5-speed makes for an engaging experience especially when paired with the added power and response of the powertrain. Both engine and transmission feel strong, pulling hard through each gear followed by smooth direct engagement into the next, this is to be expected considering the recent documented overhaul both received. As a whole if a raw analog experience is desired, this RS Cup will deliver. slough of suspension
Chassis & Exterior
Finished inside and out in Guards red the exterior is much the same as it would have been in 1993 as left the factory maintaining the classic 911 look. In terms of condition the paint is genuinely good for a race car showing signs of track use such as rock chips but nothing major. To help drop some weight the front fenders and doors have been replaced with composite version, in addition a carbon kevlar hood has been fitted. Like all others that competed in the series this RS Cup left the factory as fully race prepped chassis featuring a Matter Motorsports 6 point roll cage, seam welding in high stress areas, no sound deadening, lightweight RS glass, RS door panels with crank windows and factory sunroof delete. The suspension setup includes spherical bushings, adjustable antiroll bars, RS Cup spec Bilstein coilovers that were refreshed in 2014 with custom valving and spring rates, spherical upper strut mounts with camber adjustment for the front, and RS front uprights. RS front uprights allow for a lowered ride height while still keeping proper geometry for roll center and bump steer. The most recent exterior change has been converting back to factory aero and mounting a set of 18inch 3-piece RH speedline style wheels, previous track aero and wheel set up available. One of the most important aspects to any car let alone a racer is a straight chassis, even with this RS cup competing in numerous events and series for the past 30 years that chassis has remained in excellent condition with no structural damage.
Engine & Drivetrain
With over 30 years of racing and motorsports activity the original engine and transmission set up got a little tired, due to this the engine and transmission received a $60k complete overhaul done by Rightway in 2020. This overhaul included bumping displacement to 3.8 liters, a custom ITB set up with 45mm throttle bodies, 935 style case dowel pin conversion, web camshafts, ARP headstuds, and ARP Rod bolts. WPC treatment was performed on many parts including the entire rotating assembly, cylinder walls, camshafts, rocker arms, and wrist pins. WPC treatment aids greatly in part life, increased ability to keep oil on the surface, and increased strength, linked below will be a video and article explaining WPC treatment. A DLC coating has also been applied to the wrist pins, and rocker shafts. Controlling fuel and ignition is a HKS F-CON ECU ran in conjunction with the factory Bosch unit, as well as a MDI Dual spark ignition system. When refreshing the transmission every component was inspected for cracks or damage, and replaced where needed. Parts replaced included 2/3/4/5 synchronizer rings, 2/3 gear sets, main shaft bearings, pinion shaft bearings, and differential side bearings. Sending power from the engine to the transmission is an ATS Carbon Twin disc clutch, with appropriate flywheel.
