The Foundation
Venturi was founded in 1984 by French engineers Claude Poiraud and Gérard Godfroy, with Monaco as its home base it only makes sense that Venturi would enter the world of motorsports. The idea for this venture into motorsports came from a French sports car broker by the name of Stéphane Ratel. Ratel was looking to start a Gentlemen driver spec series similar to that offered by Porsche, to do this he turned to the French automaker Venturi. Following his proposition Ratel was made the director of Venturi motorsports, in this position he oversaw the development and production of 73 400 Trophies, which starting in 1992 customers could purchase and compete in a six-race series for a budget of around $100,000 French Francs.
Vehicle Introduction
Starting production in 1992 the 400 Trophy would be the first factory built racecar from Venturi. Although the 400 Trophy is based on an existing Venturi chassis it is a far cry from just a dressed up street car. The formula for the car was a steel monocoque, double wish bone suspension, Carbon-fiber and kevlar composite body work, and a mid mounted twin turbo PRV based 400hp 3.0L V6 mated to a 5-speed dog engagement transaxle, all of this made for a vehicle with the ability to hold its own as a proper GT racecar. Following the end of the Gentleman’s Trophy series the majority of 400s went on to compete in a multitude of racing series throughout Europe and beyond.
What you get in modern times with a 400 Trophy is a true GT racer that can be driven to the track and lined up against the top runner 1990s GT racing. This can be done while still being an investment at an attainable price in comparison to the cars it is classed with. lightly used rare condition, recently tracked
Driving Experience
The experience of piloting the 400 Trophy is one of a true 90s GT racecar, but with the addition of surprisingly good street manners. Power from the twin turbo 3.0L V6 comes on strong with just the right amount of lag adding the drama that we all crave from these older turbo cars. Having a mid engine lay out results in the sound of the engine breathing behind you making its way into the cabin, berating your sense of hearing with the glorious sounds that come from a turbocharged engine. A key component of the drivetrain that separates the 400 Trophy from being just a dressed up street car is the Dog box transmission that is paired with a proper race-spec clutch, the pairing makes for a manual driving experience that does not suit the uninitiated. With that being said, driving an H-pattern dog box on the street and doing it well is one of the most rewarding analog experiences, requiring confident direct shifts and proper timing. As expected with a production race chassis the handling is tight, direct, and responsive.
Condition Report
The two fates of most 400 Trophies were to either continue racing in a multitude of series or to be converted to a street car by Venturi, only a few customer chose to convert their cars to street cars. This specific Venturi led a little bit of a different life, competing in only one race in the Gentlemen’s Trophy, following that race this 400 Trophy would not see the circuit again until a handful of Historic races in Frances, . With that being said this 400 Trophy is in excellent and very original condition which is quite rare for a race car let alone a 400 Trophy, still wearing its original race livery plus a few inspection stickers from the historic races it partook in. The Yellow paint that envelopes the vehicles exterior is in very good original condition, showing a few chips on the front end and some spider cracking on the rear clamshell near the wing. The era correct BBS e88s that are fitted are in good condition with only a few marks in one of the faces, all lips and barrels are in great condition with no curb rash or bends. Wrapping the wheels are a set of Michelin Pilot sport 4s dated the 34th week of 2022. On the inside you’ll find a rather sparse interior with all components in great condition, the Recaro pole postion seats are valid until 2028, and the Sparco 6-point harnesses are valid until 2027. Mechanically it is in excellent condition, pulling strong to redline with the transmission shifting as a dog cox should.
