Vehicle Introduction
When it comes to truly proper RWBs we don’t discriminate, while the majority of proper builds may come out of Japan that’s not to say they can’t come from else where. This 1996 993 RWB dubbed “Fukano” exemplifies what a truly radical RWB can be, combining Japanese styling with German motorsport level build quality and components. Fukano was the third RWB to be built in Germany with the objective of being the lightest 993 RWB with a goal weight of 1000 kilograms with half a tank of fuel and no driver, this goal was chased through the process of eliminating all unnecessary systems and replacing components with lighter variants. The entire car was refreshed in a very German manner with an emphasis on reliability while still increasing performance, this was done using a great deal of Porsche parts along with components from some top tier tuning companies. This methodology results in an extremely locked in feeling chassis paired with a powerful and robust powertrain.
Driving Experience
As to be expexted with a vehicle originally destined for The Ring the ring Fukano is a dialed in machine . The suspension feels tight and fresh yet compliant, the steering is very sharp and quite quick. In terms of power and response the refreshed and hopped up 3.6 pulls to redline strongly and with a sense of urgency, each gear change feels direct and smooth happily going into each gear of the 6 speed G50. The Combination of a curb weight of 1000kg and 320ps results in very nimble responsive handling. All of the driver controls have a great feel to them with the custom chassis mounted shifter feeling direct and being well placed next to the RWB Suede steering wheel, pedal spacing is very good as well allowing for proper heal toe down shifts.
Chassis & Footwork
Staring with a 27k mile accident free California car, it was stripped down to a bare metal, all unnecessary brackets were removed then the chassis was primed and painted inside and out in Bentley Dawn Blue. Following this every component was inspected, cleaned or replaced during the reconstruction process resulting in a car whose build quality runs deeper than pretty looks. In an effort to chase the 1000kg goal, Dp Motorsports carbon doors, carbon hood, and carbon fenders were fitted, all of which were made to fit extremely well. Additional measures to reduce weight include drilling the hood hinges, RS carbon hood prop, aluminum door hinges, stripping down the wiring harness to only what is necessary, all windows replaced with plexiglass other than the windshield, and a carbon dash. To aid in chassis rigidity an Aluminum Heigo rollcage has been fitted along with additional plating at the mounting points for the cage.
For suspesion, like the rest of the car every suspension and braking component has been refreshed or replaced. Pairing with the refresh is a choice selection of upgrades including KW Clubsport 3-way coilovers with external reservoirs, 993 turbo antiroll bars with adjustable links, 964 RS non-ps steering rack, billet aluminum rear subframe bushings, and a custom set of wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888s.
Engine & Drivetrain
The engine setup that was put together for this RWB was done so with an emphasis on reliability while still increasing power, this was achieved by using a combination of OEM components, high quality aftermarket upgraded components, and being fully blue printed prior to assembly. The heads were the main focus for power improvement, including upgraded cam shafts, a solid lifter conversion and some machine work, resulting in 320ps. The exhaust fitted is a CustomWorx lightweight stainless system including headers, and mufflers along with 100 cell cats. The transmission fitted is a factory 993 6-speed with a Porsche limited slip, paired with a light weight singlemass flywheel, and a custom billet aluminum chassis mounted shifter. Engine and transmission condition is excellent, pulling strong though each gear gear and smoothly shifting to the next.
