1972 Datsun 240Z Twin-Turbo RB26 Build
The Datsun 240Z, first introduced in 1969, quickly became one of the most iconic Japanese sports cars of all time. Renowned for its timeless, sleek design and fun-to-drive character, the 240Z captured the hearts of driving enthusiasts and racers alike.
In the automotive world, the 240Z has earned a reputation as the perfect classic base for nearly any project imaginable—whether it’s the ultimate track weapon, a stylish street rod, or a dynamic canyon crawler. With key advantages such as a classic rear-wheel-drive layout, exceptionally low weight, abundant aftermarket parts, and outstanding chassis dynamics, it has become the go-to foundation for countless builds in the classic car tuner scene. Its appeal continues to endure.
This particular 240Z, based on the iconic first-generation ‘S30’ platform, elevates the car to new heights, seamlessly blending timeless vintage charm with modern, cutting-edge performance—all in one package.
The car was meticulously built and finished in a striking two-tone black and beige Datsun colours,by its first owner at his shop – PJ Bonifacio Autobody, located in La Puente, California. The exterior is nothing short of stunning, featuring a front BRE-style air dam, a rear Motorsport ducktail,” Motorsport fender flares, bullet mirrors, OG Z432 front grille, brand-new JDM Car parts tail lights, and a set of 15×9 Rota RKR wheels. The result is a modern, aggressive look that still honors its JDM-spec roots.
But this build isn’t just visually impressive; it’s an absolute powerhouse under the hood. The car is powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.6-liter RB26DETT inline-six, sourced from the Skyline GT-R. It’s equipped with N1 upgraded turbos, HKS turbo actuators, an HKS SQV blow-off valve, an Aeromotive fuel pump, and McKinney Motorsports engine mounts. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an RB25-sourced five-speed “fat” turbo manual transmission, paired with an R200 limited-slip differential from OS Giken. An OS Giken twin-plate clutch and flywheel ensure firm and precise gear engagement. The soundtrack to this powerhouse comes from a stainless-steel McKinney Motorsports exhaust header feeding into a ceramic-coated titanium exhaust.
Inside, the race-inspired cockpit includes an Autopower half-roll cage, a MOMO Indy steering wheel, a Nismo shifter knob, Recaro bucket seats, and Sabelt harnesses—everything designed to make you feel like one solid piece with the car. Aftermarket gauges—featuring a Speedhut speedometer, Defi tachometer, and additional instruments—provide essential data for the driver. An ATL fuel cell replaces the stock tank, improving weight distribution and enhancing overall fuel system performance. This car is built to perform, whether on the street or the track.
Further enhancements include the suspension and brakes, with a full Arizona Big Brake Kit upgrade (4-piston Wilwood disc brakes) and Techno Toy coilovers, complemented by Z-Store front and rear anti-roll bars. A hydraulic handbrake with a park lock feature has also been added.
It’s worth mentioning that this 240Z was showcased at the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas as the Rota Wheels Demo Car and featured at the 2018 Japanese Classic Car Show in Long Beach, California.
With just 5000 miles since completion, this car remains in exceptional condition. It comes with a full modification list, a clean California title, and is fully ready for its next chapter.
