Long before Porsche AG started production of the 930 Cabriolet, a legendary tuner of the fastest 911s in the world, had freshly minted an Automotive Manufacturer License by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. Ruf Auto, became Ruf Automobilbau.
Under the helm of its boss, Alois Ruf, the company set off to manufacture the most incredible 911 based cars in the world. These cars where conceived on body in white 911s and born with a distinctive and sought after Ruf VIN. Only a few cars are built every year at Ruf’s facility in Pfaffenhausen, Bavaria and Alois Ruf also reserves these special cars to a handful of VIPs.
In the dawn of Ruf Automobilbau, Alois started manufacturing very unique cars, catering to the custom and coach requirements from these VIPs. One of these cars was this Ruf Turbo Cabriolet, that became Alois’ personal car and a symbol of what he was capable of.
This car, as certified by the factory and very fondly remembered by Alois, became the press car and demonstrator to clients and public relations both in Europe and America. Alois keeps a photograph of himself and the car in the back of his office.
Built in 1984 in Pfaffenhausen out of a Targa SC body in white, this 930 SCR Turbo became one of the first two 911 Turbo Cabriolet in history. Subsequently it was imported and Federalized by Ruf himself in the US to be enjoyed on the West Coast and driven to Monterrey for demonstration purposes. Was featured by several news outlets and made it to the cover of Autoweek and Car & Driver as part of a model review and multi-page article about the Ruf factory and this car.
This car is what purists consider a pre-CTR and it is identified with the Ruf specific VIN No. TP1221003H (before the 17 digit standard was normalized worldwide). Several communications from Ruf Automobilbau certify its authenticity and historic relevance.
This widebody 911 is equipped with 930 Turbo flares front and rear, reinforced suspension, 3.4 liter M930 turbo engine, trademark 5 speed Ruf dogleg transmission with limited slip, Turbo Fuchs and a Lobster Red custom interior with Recaro seats. Power is adjusted by the driver -or his wife- by a manual boost controller, or “dial of death” between the seats, allowing boost to be between 5 to 13.5 PSI, allowing a max power output of about 330 HP.
Overall the condition of this SCR if amazing, evidencing the low 45K miles in the odometer. The original Ruf A1 Schwartz (Black) paint shows amazingly for the age and has just a few rock chips in the front and very small blemishes. The manual black canvass top is also in incredible condition and the rear plastic window is crystal clear. A rich red leather boot offers protection to the top while open. The Red Leather interior is phenomenal and gives a very luxurious feel, for which Ruf is very well known for. Period Goodyear tires wrap around the wheels of this historic car. The frunk is lined by a rich red velour carpet and the tool set comes in a matching red leather pouch.
