Vehicle Introduction 

Delivered new to United States, this Stone Grey Metallic 89’ 930 Turbo eventually made its way across the Pacific to Japan where it began its new life. Early on during its extended stay in Japan, it received a RUF BTR III conversion (Topdog of RUF conversions), this consisted of changes to the body work, a 3.4L with larger K27S turbo, a G50 based R5050 6 speed, Matter Motorsports roll cage, Recaro SPG buckets and a host of suspension changes including a coilover conversion with Bilstein RSR/935 coilovers. Although this 930 still retains the looks of a BTR III, it has been further developed by PROVA Motorsports in (insert City) Japan to further improve performance. PROVA Motorsports has a long history of competing in JGTC and modifying Porsches with in house developed parts with the knowledge they gained from competing. The factory BTR 3.4L has been updated with Mahle 3.4L components which resolves the well documented problem of BTR 3.4s faulty P&C’s. Pairing with the 3.4L are a host of supporting modifications including numerous in house designed parts from PROVA, a MoTeC M800, and an assortment of others that will be discussed further down. With the addition of these parts this 930 is able to produce a peak of 500hp while being responsive to the point of almost feeling naturally aspirated.

Driving Experience 

Response is a characteristic that is often lusted after but is harder to achieve as power and turbo size increase. PROVA Motorsports has managed to improve upon the already excellent RUF BTR set up that had been fitted to this Turbo, increasing response to such a degree that it almost is as if its NA while still increasing power. Pairing with the extreme response of the engine setup is a RUF R50-50 6-speed that features closer gear ratios plus the additional 6th gear keeping the car in the optimal RPM range while not being to short for sustained high speed. The power and drivetrain set up pairs excellently with stiffened chassis and tightened suspension making for a very responsive and nimble vehicle that not only punches above its class but beyond its year range. 

Engine & Drivetrain 

 As a part of the true BTR III package the engine and trans package fitted includes a 3.4L and a 6-speed. A common and well documented problem with the BTR 3.4L is cracking of the heads and other components due to weak castings, to address this issue the engine was rebuilt with revised Mahle Components. In order to increase power output and response PROVA motorsports fitted the car with an excellent selection of components including in house designed ITB system with large volume intercooler, turbo manifolds, and a high flow custom RUF inspired exhaust. Pairing with their in-house parts is a TD07s turbo, HKS wastegate, twin plug system, additional oil scavenge pump, and all controlled by a MoTeC M800. The result of all these components paired with PROVA’s experience in motorsports is an extremely responsive powerful motor with the robustness to handle extended spirited driving.

Fitted behind the front bumper is an absolutely massive RSR style oil cooler, making for a cooling system that can support extended motorsport level driving. 

The transmission fitted is a RUF R50-50 6-speed that shifts perfectly into each gear with no pops or grinds. Being a 6-speed the gear ratios are a bit closer allowing for more optimal gear ratio choice. These transmission trade for $50k+ if you can find one.

Chassis & Suspension  

As stock 930 Turbos can leave a bit to be desired in the handling department, a number of measures have been taken to improve chassis rigidity. The BTR III package includes a Matter Motorsports 6-point roll bar. In addition to this, a x-brace and strut tower bar were fitted in the front tub area. In terms of condition, the chassis of this 930 is excellent showing no rust or signs of damage. In the suspension department a full 935/RSR style coilover conversion has been fitted, including coilovers, front control arms, antiroll bars and rear spring plates. This set up greatly improves handling and aids in the ability to fine tune chassis dynamics and personal preferences. All of the suspension components are tight showing minimal signs of wear. 

Interior & Exterior 

While the underpinnings of this 930 have received a host of updates, the exterior has remained much the same as it was when originally RUF converted, keeping the classic features and lines of a proper RUF 930. The RUF exterior additions include vented rear quarters, Cup Mirrors (requiring the factory mirror mounting holes to be filled), partially filled rain gutters, front bumper with brake ducts and room for a large oil cooler, a vented rear bumper. To complete the look, a set of classic RUF 5 spoke Speedlines have been fitted. Exterior Condition is very good with the Stone Grey Metallic paint only showing some rock chips to the front end. 

On the inside you’ll find a full interior in great condition showing no major signs of wear. A pair of Recaro SPGs will hold you and  your passenger in place very well while still being comfortable. The matter motorsports rollcage that can be seen on the interior but is non-intrusive while adding a level of safety and rigidity. The full set of RUF gauges are all in excellent condition In place of the factory center console is a leather wrapped center console made to fit a double-din headunit, Aircon controls have been relocated to the factory headunit location. A few changes have been made to improve the quality of the climate control including an underbody mounted large capacity A/C condenssor, and a Eberspacher gas fueled cabin heater.
