Overview
To pay homage to the original 356 speedster Porsche produced a limited run of speedsters for the final model year of the 930 chassis, this would be the first speedster Porsche had produced in over 30 years. Porsche produced a total of 2,104 Speedsters with only 823 being destined for the US market, and this car is 1 of those 823 cars with the COA to prove it.
Now available for purchase is this excellent condition 8k original mile Gaurds Red over Black 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster coming out of the prominent car collector and NFL Hall of Famer Micheal Strahan’s car collection. This Speedster has a received some major upgrades from the Infamous Porsche tuning shop PROTO Tech. All US market 89’ speedster came optioned with the M491 package which included the widened body work, brakes and suspension from a turbo but doesn’t include the turbo motor, however this Speedster completes the package being fitted with a PROTO Tech Stage III kit allowing it to produce 600 turbo charged horsepower when set to high boost.
Condition Report
With only 8,000 original miles it’s no surprise that this Speedster is in great condition. The chassis and all structural components of the car are in excellent condition showing no signs of rust or damage which aligns with the vehicles clean Carfax. Exterior condition is great with the guards red paint presenting very well with only some minor stone chips, moving to the interior it is what you would expect for a 8,000 mile that lived indoors, everything is in excellent condition showing some very minimal signs of wear on the seats. There are no cracks in the dash, tears in the leather, or extensive wear on any of the interior. All controls and amenities function as they should with the A/C system being revised with a fender mounted condensser, and the sound system working as it should. The Carfax is clean and has a history of only 3 owners.
Performance
While the factory speedster can leave something to be desired in the performance department, this Speedster doesn’t leave you wanting for much. All of the performance modifications were done by ProtoTech, with the most notable being a Stage III engine and turbo package generating 600hp on high boost. The 600hp figure is achieved with a host of modifications with the primary ones being a bump to 3.3 liters using 97mm 7.9:1 Nikasel P&Cs, a Turbonetics P-trim turbo, PROTO Tech equal length header, full bay intercooler, Group B grind camshafts, along with many other supporting modifications. This immense power is sent to the ground through the factory g50 5-speed, paired with a heavy-duty easy action clutch and a limited slip differential.
Improvements didn’t stop at the engine and drivetrain, with the now much more powerful engine the braking and suspension systems needed to be address. For suspension a coilover conversion with Bilstein coilovers was carried out, with the supporting modification of gusseting the rear upper strut mounts. Providing more stopping power are a set of 928 S4 front brake, paired with the original turbo front brakes being moved to the back. The wheels fitted are a set of 17inch Fuchs style wheels wrapped in Nitto tires. All of this work resulted in Speedster that is not only runs like a bat out of hell but can actually handle. All of the suspension and braking components feel excellent showing no signs of excessive wear.
Interior & Exterior
The exterior shows very well and is all original to the speedster except for the turbo tail to fit the intercooler, the 17inch Fuchs style wheels, and a bit of an altitude adjustment from the coilovers, these small tweaks make for a car with much more presence while still mainting an OEM+ aesthetic. The full black leather interior is accented with touches of red throughout, and has a pair of the very desirable factory sport seats The red faces of the gauges are an excellent touch that really set the interior off. Tucked under dash is an HKS EVC boost controller where with the push of a button you can turn the speedster up to 11.
