BACKGROUND
As much as cars serve as function, they equally and simultaneously serve as an expression – making the fusion between automotive culture and fashion a common occurrence. We know that RWBs are all about expression as well. Originating from pure, raw, rough around the edges motorsport function (RAUH WELT meaning rough world), they’ve turned into a symbol of automotive style because of their standout visual presence and functional versatility over the years… from original track oriented titans like our upcoming Cavalino 2 to high-power show cars like the famous Norwegian RWB RURI (now owned by a good friend of ours in the West Coast) there’s practically nothing you can’t do to these machines. A widebody Porsche acts like a canvas and then it’s up to you to create its motive.
Now available at RMC Miami is one of the earliest stateside-built examples. This backdated 1982 911 SC was built by ILLEST – a well-known streetwear & lifestyle brand founded by Mark Arcenal which blended streetwear fashion with automotive culture – for the 2017 Complexcon streetwear convention in Long Beach, CA.
SETUP & CONDITION REPORT
EXTERIOR
The setup starts off with a factory ‘82 narrow body SC spec backdated into a ‘73 RSR tribute with a Superwide kit and rear ducktail option personally installed by Nakai. Backdate components were sourced courtesy of Sierra Madre.
Finished in a dark Slate grey, this RWB presents a stealth look which is contradicted but complemented with a set of brushed gold Rotiform MLW deep dish wheels. The dark exterior tone compliments the backdated style, not giving it an overly-modernized look that usually comes with such a level of customization. The paint shows good condition, with minimal to no chips or scratches on the front end but with typical rock chipping on the fronts of the rear fenders. The hardware and seals of the Rauh Welt flares are in excellent condition and there’s no dirt or grime buildup anywhere on the chassis – a clean example.
INTERIOR
The interior presents a nice blend of vintage styling and comfort. Most notable are the black leather Recaro LX seats which show near-perfect condition and the RWB steering wheel paired with a Rothsport quick release and hub. In the footwells you’ll find Rennline aluminum pedals and footwell plates which compliment the overall RSR hot rod look. The dash is in excellent condition and there are no interior leaks thanks to newly installed window seals. A fully functional AC and radio make this example an excellent street car regardless of the location.
TECHNICAL
The exhaust note compliments the setup. Although the powertrain is basically factory, opening up the exhaust makes a difference in these cars. A set of Bursch headers and a central M&K muffler open up exhaust flow while offering a deep, bass-filled exhaust tone. Separated dual exhaust tips compliment the backdate look as well. The powertrain was well maintained. In 2017 the engine was rebuilt and between 2012-2017, multiple belt services were performed. This engine navigates rpms smoothly and the 915 transmission shifts smoothly with no grinding.
Suspension setup wasn’t overlooked by any means – allowing maintained drivability and increased feel with the Superwide kit. The bilstien dampers were modified with Von Street gas inserts and 930 turbo tie rods were fitted to maintain functionality and feel. Larger hollow sway bars were installed in the front & rear (22mm, 30mm) and bushings were refreshed all around with OEM parts. Bump steer correction kits were implemented to compensate lower ride height and its effect on geometry.
Overall this RWB is a great example of mechanical attention to detail especially in the suspension setup. It’s quite user friendly but with a very direct road feel making it versatile on both straight Miami streets and in the mountain curves. Comfortable yet planted at high speeds. The exhaust note fills the cabin with a classic heavy-bass sound. We doubt you’ll use the radio much.
