Vehicle Introduction
This Euro 1985 BMW E24 M635CSi is a highly sorted and extensively serviced example of BMW’s iconic grand touring coupe, representing the brand’s motorsport heritage and giving its driver the analog experience we all crave in this world of modern cars. With approximately 88,000 miles, this E24 stands out as a very nice example in terms of physical and mechanical condition. Documenting the maintenance, service and modifications is a stack of records spanning the past 10 years.
Mechanical Breakdown
Being an early European ROW market import means this M635CSi stands above the later US market M6 being better looking, better handling and more powerful. Powered by a M88/3 straight six derived from the legendary BMW M1’s M88/1, this Euro E24’s engine is higher compression at 10.5:1, has more aggressive cams, and has fewer emissions restrictions compared to the U.S. spec S38b35, allowing it to produce 282hp compared to the 256hp of the US cars. In addition the ROW model was roughly 250lbs lighter than the US making this the true “Shark”. The engine received a full reseal, ignition system refresh, fuel system refresh, a full cooling system overhaul and a Billy Boat exhaust, all with documentation, with all of this service done the engine feels very solid pulling to redline strongly and with less worry of the common issues of vintage BMWs.
The factory Getrag G280 5-speed has been replaced with a later model Getrag G265 5-speed from an E30 M3, which is a stronger transmission, with stronger synchros, a stronger case, more readily available, and doesn’t have the same gear whine issue as the G280. Pairing with the G265 is an upgraded clutch that is still very street friendly feeling close to OEM, power is then sent to the factory limited slip differential. This setup feels very good shifting smoothly into each gear with no pops or grinds.
In the handling department euro cars were devoid of the problematic SLS system and ran a more traditional set up, this car has been taken a step further having a set of CA Tuned coilovers fitted, making for a slightly stiffer performance oriented set up that is still comfortable on the street. In addition to the coilovers, it received a full suspension refresh including bushings, steering linkage and ball joints. A set of 18inch Speedline Alessio SL978 have been fitted making for sleek and aggressive stance paired with the coilovers.
Condition Report
Exterior condition is very good for a vehicle of this age, with the Alpine white paint that envelopes the car having only minor imperfections. Being a Euro car this E24 has the very desirable Euro bumpers which make for a much sleeker look. A few minor exterior imperfections are pressent, including rock chips, and some scratches on the windows which is a very common problem for this era of BMWs. The Speedlines fitted are in good condition with some minor imperfections as to be expected with an older set of wheels. The car presents very well and is in great condition for a vehicle of this age.
Interior condition is good for a vehicle of this age, having had an interior refresh, that included reupholstering the front and rear seats, and dash cap installed. Some imperfections are present, including a few small holes in the center console by the handbrake. The rest of the factory interior is in good condition showing no major signs of wear. In place of the factory head-unit is a bluetooth Continental unit that blends decently well with the interior.
Mechanically this E24 is in excellent condition receiving extensive service as previously stated. The car feels very tight, handling and performing very well. This E24 will come serviced and ready to go.
