Introduction
In recent years, with the ever so growing popularity of Rauh Welt Begriff, the concept and intention of the practically legendary body style has started to change from “rough world” function to “rough world” aesthetic . The massive fenders which created opportunity for maximum contact patch to maximize the potential of the rear-biased Porsche 911 are instead being used to attract massive media attention.
Suddenly, the motive, or what lies underneath the exterior, isn’t in tandem with the original motive of Akira Nakai’s work. And in today’s world, very few know what the origins of Rauh Welt are: motorsport. The modernized cruisers and show cars are only a thing of the present. So we are happy to offer an RWB of the past here at RMC Miami: Cavalino 2
If you already own an RWB, this may be an eye-opening experience.

Background
RWB Cavalino 2, built by Nakai for his best friend, started as a 1987 narrow 911 C2 which is considerably unrecognizable to how this machine sits today. At the start of RWB in the late 90’s, Nakai’s super widebody conversions weren’t bolted on and seem sealed. Instead, they were smooth, molded aluminum fenders with the overall kit commonly referred to as a “smoothie.” The bolt-on design came later on as a solution to track mishaps, serving as a replaceable component (perhaps taking inspiration from the wide fenders found on the later-released 993 GT2).
Smooth body examples are quite rare since they can only be built at the RWB headquarters, and Cavalino 2 represents the epitome of the Japanese motorsport roots – previously putting down a 1:01 lap time at Tsukuba Circuit, a benchmark at one of the most well known time attack circuits in the world and photos below show liveries once worn to battle by this machine at events such as the Idlers games. If you visit the link below you’ll see that this RWB has a rich racing history. Visiting tracks such as Twin Ring Motegi time and time again for close to two decades.
This example was built for racing from the ground up – featuring a fully welded cage, a coilover conversion, custom lower control arms and a Brembo big brake kit poking from behind the deep dish 19″ SSR Professors. The setup combination provides endurance capabilities. The custom maritime blue and the cage were done personally by Nakai, confirmed by Nakai himself.
Every window except the windshield has been replaced with lexan with two naca ducts in the quarter windows feeding air to a high strung, high compression, cammed ITB 3.6 993 motor built by M’s Machine with a big cam . Management is controlled by an EMS 6860 motorsport ECU with tuning done by Challenge Racing who also took care of chassis setup. The setup retains consistency and reliability with upgraded fuel rails and an upgraded fuel pressure regulator. In addition the 3.6 was fitted with a twin-plug conversion. The lexan firewall that lets you look back at the motor is one of only four that were made by Nakai
Overall Cavallino II is a handful to drive… so much so that on while driving it on a hot summer afternoon you’re too preoccupied to realize there’s no air conditioning. There’s no point of having a radio either because the motor screams through the custom lexan firewall. It’s not only a highlight of a true original RWB, it’s also a perfect example of why these vintage machines are becoming so sought after.
