1991 Porsche 964 911 Carrera 2
Combining motorsport-motivated usage with every day street ability is not an easy task especially in a vintage Porsche. Hot rods lack the ability to quote on “commute” while those with excessive street presence start to show their shortcomings when driving enthusiasm is brought to the table
Good Luck (GLUCK) Racing, operating out of Osaka Japan did an excellent job merging the two functions together on this black-on-black C2. With a lot of recent coverage on wide body examples, seeing a factory narrow body 964 C2 seems like a rarity.
A pleasant classic Porsche body line, simple jet black (insert specific) finish on iconic BBS motorsport E88 wheels is a go-to recipe. Compared to some of our recent inventory the exterior looks rather tame but once you dedicate attention to the inobvious, you see that what sits front of you is a fine tuned, versatile machine with a powertrain set up nothing short of exhilarating and accompanying modifications that turn this into one of perhaps the finest naturally aspirated Porsche 911s to land in the states.
Under the rear hatch sits a low profile, fully overhauled & blueprinted butterfly ITB 3.8L flat six. Ported heads, larger valves and RS cams take only a fraction of the setup and are paired with a custom set of headers. Management is controlled by a Link G4X.
Packaging is clean simple and modern. Polished runners, refreshed accessories, nylon braided lines that lead from the AC compressor back into the firewall area and a fuel pressure regulator that sits in an open spot at the firewall. Accessibility is a plus due to the lack of an air box.
The gearing of the five speed matches the snappy personality of the 3.8: crisp direct movement from the 993 RS shifter while retaining a purist factory feel. Trans is in perfect shape, a upgraded RS LSD helps put the power down around spirited corners.
The personality of the motor is described best as that of a sport bike thanks to the lightweight RS clutch, flywheel and RSR custom-made headers. Fast revving & insanely responsive – somewhat resembling that of vintage race bike. Even the weight of your foot on the throttle at idle bumps revolutions a few hundred digits.
However, the powertrain isn’t the only highlight of this build. GLUCK fitted the C2 with a custom set of silvers coilovers that allow it to sit extremely low while retaining proper damper travel. 964 turbo big brakes peak from behind the gold BBS faces. Camber plates and H&R sway bars keep stability under weight transfer and further elaborate the versatility of this build.
The interior is a pleasant combination of vintage motorsport functionality with just a touch of modernization when it comes to creature comforts like air-conditioning and an OEM Porsche Classic infotainment system. Fixed Recaro SPG bucket seats (RS style) wrapped in two-tone gray leather command the interior styling while a Saito half cage envelops the rear while not being intrusive for the driver or passenger. The seats show slight signs of use but have no tears or stains while the dash and headliner are in great condition.
The best word to describe the driving experience of this example is “sharp.” Extreme response from the driveline combined with extreme response from suspension brakes and weighted steering create perhaps the pinnacle vintage Porsche all in a pleasant narrow body 964 C2. With link management and refreshing to the entire chassis, the street mannerisms of this machine feel quite modern. At 5:30 PM in Miami rush-hour traffic this example was no hassle. No overheating or rough idling. Just a quiet purring. The clutch is easy and throttle input, although snappy, is predictable. Built to handle the limit for extended periods of time, it can handle a simple commute to the grocery store just as well. All in all, GLUCK did an excellent job creating a fusion between vintage purism and modern fine tuning.
Recent service includes new timing chain guides and tensioners, new CV joints in the rear and fresh Motul 300V 10W60 oil. The BBS’s have been fitted with fresh Bridgestone RE71RS 200tw tires.
