Here at RMC Miami we strive to find the rowdiest, hottest, most unique examples of practically every make and model. Whether it’s a completely track focused G-body RWB or a Superfly Cadillac straight out of a pimp’s garage, we like originality.
We are pleased to offer what we consider one of the coolest SW20 Toyota MR-2s around – a pleasant hybrid of street and track drivability with an excellent combination of high quality and extremely rare parts, well cared for by the original builder and previous owner. The base of this build is an original jet black on black leather GT-S model which comes with the renowned 3S-GTE turbo 4cyl and a few other cosmetic options that the base MR2 doesn’t have.
From the outside in, this machine screams unobtanium. Aerodynamics greatly attended for this setup starting with a full body upgrade courtesy of ASK-SPORT fenders and Progress bumpers. Additionally, a local company by the name of JNF did a full spat setup to complement the front canards and keep airflow smooth – something quite important in a short wheelbase machine like an SW20. To settle the rear end, the original designer used a two element Voltex rear wing.
For powertrain tuning, everything is set up to perform consistently on track. A TRUST TD06-20G turbo and Apexi FC setup provides around 370hp to the rear wheels which is an absolute handful in a little car like this. Power comes on hard, shifting is smooth and there are no overheating or misfiring issues even in the extremely harsh South Florida conditions at the time this was written. A high capacity radiator sits up front with a custom aluminum shroud that strategically routes into the hood vent. An oil cooler and transmission cooler sit up front as well. The 3S-GTE is easily one of the best sounding four cylinders ever. A custom resonated titanium exhaust provides clean sound without much drone or NVH.
For footwork, the most obvious modification is the extremely rare TRD strut brace setup front and rear that braces each tower to a central chassis point making a massive difference in stability. Apexi N1 coilovers and upgraded arms settle the easily-twitchy rear end. A set of brushed gold SSR Type C’s with 200tw Falken RT660s reinforce traction as well. One of the most notable modifications on this car are the Wilwood bias valves located in the interior cabin. These help regulate force to the front and rear independently rather than working off a standard bias bar.
The interior is extremely clean with no cracks on the dash, good condition his & hers recaro seats and a nice blue Cusco cage. Temperature and pressure readout is provided by a full set of Defi gauges. As mentioned, the extremely cool Wilwood valves sit mounted on the left side of the center tunnel for easy access. Overall, this is a wicked build and requires the right driver to handle the power output and maintain such a unique machine.
