Vehicle Introduction
Now available at RMC Miami is one of the last H-pattern FIA GT endurance machines: the Porsche 996 GT3R. Originally starting production halfway through 1999, the GT3R would be Porsches first venture into endurance racing with their new 996 chassis. This venture would prove to be very worthwhile, finishing first in class for the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 2000 winning every race in the FIA GT Championship’s N-GT class, and securing a class win at the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans. Additionally the GT3R would achieve class victories at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, Daytona, and in the American Le Mans Series. This is by far one of the most radical naturally aspirated H-pattern racecars produced by Porsche in modern times.
Arriving in Japan in 2002 this car was used for HPDE, Idlers Games races, and Porsche Cup challenges. Being one of 63 units produced, this GT3R may be one of only a few examples that remains uncrashed, retaining all original panels and hardware. This can be attributed to its lack of prominent race history, and proper Gentlemen driving commonly seen in Japan. Most recently this car has been serviced by the GT3R gurus Alex Job Restoration (AJR) and is delivered as race ready with a set of fresh slicks on BBS motorsport magnesium e88s and comes with some spares. Additionally, this car qualifies for historic racing (HSR) and other similar series.
Exterior
The exterior is livery-free/body-in-white with the exception of the GT3 Cup Challenge Japan number plates, a Porsche banner, idlers games inspection stickers, and a few other stickers. The aerodynamic configuration includes a few changes (from front to rear) front canards, Craftsquare carbon mirrors, vented Lexan quarter windows and a high-downforce carbon wing. Exterior condition is very good with only minor imperfections including a few stone chips on the windshield, some cracking in the paint on the front fenders and the rear decklid, this will be shown in photos, with that being said the exterior is in excellent condition for a racecar of any year let alone one that is 26 years old.
Interior/Safety
The interior is in good condition and presents well with minimal wear on the Recaro seat, controls and cage, with little to no dirt buildup or staining.
Suspension & Chassis
Behind the ATS Motorsport multispoke wheels sits a full set of Brembo motorsport calipers with 380mm front rotors and 355mm rears, a set of spare front come with the vehicle. Force distribution is controlled by a recently refreshed AP Racing dual master cylinder set up with a balance bar to control bias. The original ZF Sachs dampers are present as well and are in good working condition. There are no leaks from the brake system or from the dampers. All suspension mounting points have heim joints as to be expected with a race chassis and are in good condition having no play. Suspension and chassis were inspected while at AJR.
Powertrain and Drivetrain
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.6L flat six (engine code M96.77) derived from the Porsche GT1 and produces an unrestricted 415hp at 8200rpm running on 100 octane fuel. The engine fires quickly and without trouble then comes to a smooth idle. Paired to the engine is a G96 6-speed motorsport level gearbox derived from the Porsche 993 GT2, each gear engages as it should, shifting smoothly through each gear. The G96 variant used in the GT3R features steel synchros for 3rd-5th gear, a pressured oiling system with dedicated pump, oil to water heat exchanger and a 40% / 60% asymmetrical clutch type limited slip differential. Full power and drivetrain were inspected and serviced when at AJR.
