With the growing appreciation for 2000’s fashion, culture and machinery, RMC Miami is happy to present a Y2K icon: the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. This iteration of the ten-variant evolution lineup spanning from 1992 to 2015 is the middle generation of what is perhaps the most recognized and successful body: the Evo VII-IX.
In general, Evolutions are good at practically any task you assign them to. It’s one of the most successful rally chassis ever made, can run a 7 second quarter mile and also capable of running low 50’s on Tsukuba circuit with enough development. However, our example isn’t highly modified. It’s a well preserved, “boos up” example of the Evo VIII chassis and can be enjoyed as-is or used as a great base for a gnarly build. It highlights the simplicity of the chassis and how it can be enjoyed in all forms.
This example shows extremely well inside and out with only 57,000 original miles. Finished in A31 Apex Silver with a rare slicktop option, the paint shines super bright in the sun and shows practically no imperfections. The factory 6-spoke Enkei wheels have no cracks or bends and also shine (they do have a couple marks here and there from tire installation). The factory 4-pot front and 2-pot rear Brembo brakes show an excellent red finish. Clear coat on sensitive areas such as the front bumper, rear wing and skirts is near perfect. Another interesting point is the original serial number stickers for each fender are still completely intact showing that this is indeed an unscathed chassis.
The interior of the Evolution lineup always presents a simple and focused layout. Black with blue center Recaro adjustable bucket seats show excellent condition with no rips or significant wear. The matching back seats also show excellent condition. The headliner has no sagging but does have a few stains here and there. The dash is flawless and the factory Momo Mitsubishi steering wheel has been wrapped in alcantara with blue stitching to match the seats. A fully functional Sony headunit sits inside of a silver color matched infotainment trim piece showing no damage to the screen or peeling on the trim. Another notable feature of this Evo, 22 years later is an ice cold AC system! Something super important to us here in South Florida during these hot summers. In front of the factory shifter you’ll find a Greddy turbo timer, a good indicator that the original owner cared for the health of the motor. AEM accessory gauges are mounted on the A-pillar for easy view
Under the bonnet you’ll find a very clean, slightly modified later generation 4G63 platform paired to a standard 5-speed manual transmission. Most notable is the bright red valve cover and matching 3-point strut brace. Additionally, this evo has been fitted with an Injen intake, mishimito radiator, upgraded intercooler, downpipe and an axleback exhaust. Suspension is factory but slightly lowered on springs, still comfortable. The ECU is loaded with a flexfuel tune that bumps boost with an approximate 300whp output on 93oct and 370whp on an E50 mix. The motor idles and pulls extremely smooth, gear shifts are crisp and the original turbo keeps the throttle quite responsive with very little lag. It’s an excellent example to enjoy as is or can be used as the start of a versatile build.
